The Tomb of Two Ramesside Chanters
A Lecture By

Room 20 Barrows Hall
UC Berkeley Campus
This lecture will present the results of the University of Memphis?s
first season of epigraphic work in Theban tomb 16, that of Panehsy, a
priest and chanter who lived during the reign of Ramesses II. Panehsy
and his wife Tarenu were both chanters. While it is unremarkable for a
woman to serve a deity this way, it was a rare title for men.
Additionally, Panehsy was a priest in the cult of Amenhotep I of the
forecourt, traditionally viewed as the oracular manifestation of the
dead king. The scenes in the tomb elucidate the duties of priests in
both those capacities. The tomb is also a case study for looting. Six
scenes were stolen from it between the 1960s and 1980s. How this was
done, what we can learn from it, and what we will do next, is also an
interesting story.
Dr. Suzanne Onstine is an assistant professor of history at the
University of Memphis. She received her PhD in 2001 from the University
of Toronto and did undergraduate work at the University of Arizona.
While Onstine has worked on several excavations and epigraphic projects
in Egypt and Jordan, TT16 is the first field project she has directed.
This research was inspired by the work on chantresses for her book ?The
Role of the Chantress in Ancient Egypt?, published in 2005. She is also
the book review editor for JARCE, and the contact person for the
Memphis, TN area ARCE interest group/.
