Post by m***@gmail.comHi,
I am looking for a hieroglyphic signifying the profession
"interpreter". Does anyone know where I can find this image or can
give me more details about it?
Thanks!
There's no signgle glyph for the term "Interpreter". In Egyptian the
word is /aAw/, sometimes rendered as /Aaa/, /aw/, or /aA/. In glyphs,
the term is rendered in the following glyphs (4 different ways):
D36:W109
G1-D36:D36-F18-T14-A2
F18-A2
G1-D36:D36-Z7-F132-A24
If you are not familar with the Gardiner signlist, you should look
into a copy of one of the following books:
Allen, J. P. 2000. _Middle Egyptian: An Introduction to the Language
and Culture of Hieroglyphs_. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.
Collier, M. and B. Manley 1998. _How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs: A
Step-by-Step Guide to Teach Yourself_. London/Los Angeles/Berkeley:
University of California Press.
Gardiner, A. H. 1982 (1957). _Egyptian Grammar: Being an Introduction
to the Study of Hieroglyphs_. Oxford: Griffith Institute.
To understand how to read the glyphs above, you will also need to know
something about Manuel de Codage, which is how glyphs are expressed on
computers. See
