The Origin of Evil

Evil was born in Romania. Early in the history of Romania, someone
discovered that, if you steal a chicken, you can make chicken soup. This was
evil. Then a Greek shepherd discovered that sheep made good company for
lonely Greeks. And then a Hungarian discovered that Romanians would sell
their sisters for cash. And all that was evil.

Then the angels told God that things were getting out of control, but God
was patient with her children and things got worse and then better and then
even worse.

And then the angels sent a delegation to God, who, by then, had institued a
Heavenly Security Department and had tapped the telephones of every soul
from the Middle East. They told God what evil was loose in the world. They
told God about wars, WMD's. genocide, pornography, global warming and the
lies the elected lying liars tell.

God turned her face to the wall to hide her tears. She looked down at the
Middle East, Africa, the oceans and the melting ice caps. She looked at the
hungry children in Africa. She looked at the spread of HIV. And she saw the
souls of dead American soldiers, Afghan militants, Somali farmers and a
large group of people who died from bombings.

She closed the Book of Life and said to the angel, "To Hell with them."
